Loud Apartment

Loud Apartment is a New York City music group created by musician and technologist Nevaris AC. The current lineup features legendary producer/bassist Bill Laswell, turntablist DJ Logic, guitarist Will Bernard, multi instrumentalist Peter Apfelbaum, drummer Lockatron, and Nevaris (voice, percussion, keyboards).

Loud Apartment’s second studio album, System Breakdown, will be released on Oct. 15th. 2020. It is the first with this lineup. The album was produced by Bill Laswell and created at Orange Music in West Orange New Jersey.

The recording of System Breakdown began in January of 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. After the pandemic hit NYC the recording was halted. Nevaris began writing new lyrics that reflected his anger at the administration. The band returned to the studio in the summer of 2020 and finished the album with the new material, giving the record a more political tone.

Below are some lyrics from “Enough is Enough”, written during the break in recording.

“Unmarked police in unmarked cars / pull people from the streets no idea who they are / soldiers of a corrupt administration / spread hatred and racism through the nation….No ban no registry / fuck white supremacy / they put a white supremacist in the office of the presidency / openly blatantly / celebrating the legacy / the fucking legacy of genocide and slavery”

Loud Apartment originally formed in 2008 with a lineup that featured Nevaris on vocals and keyboards, Kenny Grohowski on drums, Jim Robertson on bass, and Angel Rodriguez on percussion.  The group was the de facto house band for Nolej Studios in midtown Manhattan, and Uncomun events held monthly at Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn. Guitarist Matt Dickey joined the band in 2010. Their debut album Get Up Get Down was released in 2012 featuring Bernie Worrell as a featured guest. The music was mixed by Bill Laswell. Bernie appeared with them for several live performances at Galapagos Art Space, Drom, and Public Assembly  in NYC.

Loud Apartment is known for performing at unconventional events, often privately held, where they frequently collaborate with artists from across mediums and music genres. Collaborators have  included vocalists (Garrison HawkMaya Azucena, Rustem Khojmemedov, Baba IsraelImany Mladao, Eli Efi), DJ’s (DJ Logic, DJ Ambideckstricks, DJ Speedrail, DJ Black Panther), dancers (Rockafella, Kwikstep, Sita Frederick, Max Pollack, projectionists (VJ Full Stealth, Carlo De Jesus, Tiffany Kao), and visual artists such as Jose Ortiz.

In 2019 Nevaris Approached Bill Laswell about working with him and drummer Lockatron on new material. From the first time playing together in the studio the new project took off. “I’ve learned a ton from working with Bill” says Nevaris. Not just about creating music but also about getting work done. Not getting stuck in the creative process. I’ve really enjoyed working with this particular group of musicians”. In November the current lineup is returning to the studio to continue recording material.
